APPRENTICE DRILL
Saturday, January 14, 2012
-
For the first AP drill of 2012 the crew focused on one of the most important jobs of an Engine company, and that is supplying water. The crew of 10 split up between Snozzle 8 and Engine 8 and went around town working on hooking up the truck and humat valve at various hydrant locations. The crew worked on every possibility when hooking up the hydrant. Time was spent discussing different options to ensure having enough hose, such as wrapping a telephone pole close by to give a little bit of extra hose just in case. The crew also went over hooking an engine into a humat valve after a supply line had been laid and also how to do a shut down hook up. Because of the temperature being below freezing, none of the lines where charged. During the drill every member had many opportunities to hook up the hydrant, and by the end everyone was improving on their times. A good time was had by all in attendance.

PRIDE COMMITMENT SERVICE
Thursday, January 12, 2012
-
Tonight, three members received the Station 8 Challenge Coin. The award was for saving a life on 12/9/2011. The crew performed CPR on a patient during a response for a Cardiac Arrest. On this day the company was dispatched for a Elevator rescue in Ridley Parks local and was diverted from that response once 07 command returned the company for no services needed. The crew redirected and was first in on the cardiac arrest and their immediate actions help save the patient’s life. Great job team! The three EMT's that worked the patient and received the Challenge Coin are, Elliot Timlin, Rachael Bierman and Sean Boyd.

“I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a firefighter The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the firefighter has to do believe that his is a noble calling. There is an adage which says that, "Nothing can be destroyed except by fire." We strive to preserve from destruction the wealth of the world which is the product of the industry of men, necessary for the comfort of both the rich and the poor. We are defenders from fires of the art which has beautified the world, the product of the genius of men and the means of refinement of mankind. But, above all; our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men-the work of God Himself. Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even at the supreme sacrifice. Such considerations may not strike the average mind, but they are sufficient to fill to the limit our ambition in life and to make us serve the general purpose of human society.”

-- Chief Edward F. Croker FDNY circa 1910
