Everyone knows someone affected by heart disease or stroke. For those I love, I will be walking in this year’s Start! Heart Walk. We are raising critical dollars for heart disease and stroke research and education.

You can help me reach my goal by making a donation online. Click on the link below and you will be taken to my personal donation page where you can make a secure online credit card donation. The American Heart Association's online fundraising website has a minimum donation amount of $25.00. If you prefer to donate less, you can do so by sending a check directly to me.

Your donation will help fight our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers—heart disease and stroke. You are making a difference. Thank you for your support.

Thanks to all who helped on thursday night during our Fire Prevention Open House. This was by far our best Open House yet. Remember with your help, we can continue to make this an evening where the residents of our town can visit us and take home some valuable information. Plus, the children can learn some basic skills to help them in case of an emergency in their homes. Again thanks, I am looking forward to working with everyone again next year.

September 11th Rememberance Sermon
Sunday, September 14, 2008
-
Where were you at the time the two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, or when another crashed into the Pentagon, or what about when the one crashed into a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania?

I remember how quiet it was that afternoon and the following days, as all airplanes were grounded. Where I was stationed at the Air Station in Beaufort, normally all I could hear all day were the roar of fast movers patrolling not only our area, but also flying up and down the coast. But all that was stopped for a short time. It was an eerie time, a time of quiet and a time of reflection.

We looked to those first responders who although scared, reacted to help others in need. We remember the scenes with Police, Firefighters and EMT's rushing toward the falling Twin Towers or the collapsing pentagon or the burning plane in a field in Western Pennsylvania.

We all watched with horror as the smoke covered all of Manhattan, a coal field in Western Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Where were you when it happened? What were you doing?

For most of us, it is a memorable period in our life, where life had changed forever. We walked around less innocent that day, yet closer to each other. Families changed. We said things like I love you to those we forgot to say it to earlier; we sought after those we had been estranged from because of life's workings. We all learned that day how short life can be.  We in many ways changed to become more like what Adam and Eve were like before they ate from the tree of knowledge. We called each other, we openly cried, we respected each other. Someone cut you off on the highway and your first reaction was to tell that person off, but you held back. You cheered our president as he stood in that burning pile of rubble that was the world trade center and talked to all the first responders. We cheered him on. We looked with pride at all of that in authority as they led this country through its toughest time, from the mayor of NY City all the way up to the president.

We watched with pride, every time a fire truck would run off to a fire we would pull out of the way and pray that they would have to witness another 9/11. I remember at the Marine Corps Air station in Beaufort, folks would stop by and drop off some food or movies to all the Marines. Or when you went to Dunkin Donuts and a police officer, emt or firefighter was in there, you'd buy them a coffee or lunch!

Then life went along, the images of the twin towers were taken off the air, and life got busy. Unfortunately we slipped back into September 10th all too quickly. Do you see how after September 11th we were like God wanted us to be, to care for each other regardless of who we were, to take care of strangers, to love one another? But then we got tempted to get away from that way of life and revert back to September 10th. And that is why this Sunday, the Sunday after the anniversary of September 11th, we take time out to bless and pray for those who still live in September 11th. Those first responders that don't care who you are and show up when you are in need.  Jesus went to the cross for irregar dless of who we were, but we were in need, just like all these brave firefighters, Police Officers and EMT's, Jesus shows up when we need him without asking questions, just that we are in need and He is here to help us.

We need to keep coming back to September 11th every year, open our doors for prayer, for thoughts, for remembrance and to ask God to bring us back to the way we were after this tragedy hit our country. So as long as I am a priest, I know I will always be casting my shadow on the doorways of firehouses and police stations, and in Hospitals with September 11th in my heart and mind.

Today, as you head out of here, rethink on how you have changed since September 11th, and what or who has brought you back to September 10th. What do you need to look around your world and understand that you never have a redo on today. Who do you know that needs a friend, a hand, an ear, and what connection have you somehow since September 11th let get distant again, and that you need to renew. Today, live as if every day was September 11th, understand that life is too short to let go those relationships that have gotten distanced, too short to be mean to one another, and live as if it were your last day, and you were being judged on how well you lived that day.

AMEN

-Father Bill Hesse (Station 08 Chaplain - St. James Episcopal Church, Prospect Park, PA)
